Last night, Russia blocked a draft resolution in the UN Security Council concerning the chemical attack in Syria. The document proposed by Western countries almost didn't differ from the previous one. It featured the same unfounded accusations and threats against the official Damascus. However, the investigation of the incident, which Moscow insists on, was never held. The discussion was so hot that the participants at some point even switched to the informal "you". Alexander Khristenko reports from the United States.

In the Security Council, Rycroft, Britain's Permanent Representative, once again tried to chastise Russia. He called Moscow’s support of Assad unscrupulous. At that time, Secretary of State Tillerson was negotiating in the Russian capital. You got scared, you can’t sleep, because of the mere thought that we will cooperate with the United States. You are afraid of this! Everything is done to ensure that this cooperation is undermined. And that's why... Look at me! Don’t you look away! Why are you looking away?

Presiding Permanent Representative of the United States Nikki Haley preferred not to interfere in the men’s fight. Rycroft got nervous. His attacks on Russia didn’t go unanswered. Russia’s initiative in 2013 to destroy Syrian chemical weapons failed, and Russia's pride, the negotiation process in Astana, ended in humiliation. You make insulting demands to the process guarantor in Astana. And what did you do to stop the fire? You are serving the interests of armed groups. Is it them you care about? You're very confused in your own anti-regime ideas. Don’t you dare to insult Russia again!

The fact that the Western idea of regime change has turned into an obsession is confirmed by another revelation of WikiLeaks. The website published materials from private correspondence between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her advisor Jake Sullivan. In February 2012, he wrote to the Secretary of State (quote): "Al-Qaeda in Syria is on our side". This is about the fact that the terrorist leader Al-Zawahiri called on Muslims to help overthrow Bashar Assad. And now, Security Council members accuse Russia of being on the wrong side of history.





The draft resolution was rejected because of a dissenting vote by a permanent member of the Security Council. Russia vetoed the western draft resolution on Syria, which, formally, called for an investigation of the alleged chemical attack. But in fact, it didn’t even require experts to go to the place of the incident. But the text also included a threat to use military force against Damascus. The Western permanent representatives knew from the very beginning that in this form the resolution didn’t suit Moscow and wouldn’t be passed. Nevertheless, they decided to put the draft document to vote and thereby created a media effect. As in "Look, Russia once again vetoed when it came to Syria". In reality nobody tried to find an acceptable compromise and to agree on something concrete.

The US President made an unexpectedly conciliatory statement. Things will work out fine between the USA and Russia. At the right time everyone will come to their senses and there will be lasting peace. Donald Trump, who gave the order to bomb the Shayrat airbase with Tomahawks, suddenly called on everyone to be patient, and said that Secretary of State Tillerson had a very successful meeting in Moscow.
