Today all of the world's media is focused on the strange maneuver of the US Naval ships led by a nuclear aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. The strike group was going to Australia, but suddenly turned and hurried to the Korean Peninsula. Presumably to protect S. Korea from N. Korea’s threats, and to diffuse the situation in the region. But so far it had the opposite effect. And now about the possible goals and consequences of Washington’s new unforseen move our correspondent in the region Sergei Mingajev.





US Naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson moved towards the Korean Peninsula at the same time as the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s interview was published. After the rocket assault on the Syrian air base, Washington is unambiguously making clear which country may be the next one. Pyongyang’s reaction followed immediately.

Certain forces shout that the recent US military strike against Syria is meant to warn us, but we will not be intimidated by this. We have substantially strengthened our nuclear power and are now able to resist any reckless attempt by the US to launch a war. The problem of the N. Korean nuclear program was one of the main issues during the meeting of Donald Trump with China’s President Xi Jinping.

Despite the showy hospitality and the words of the Mar-a-Lago’s owner himself that the summit was successful, they did not agree on the Pyongyang issue. Having listened to the Chinese leader’s statements about the need to continue resolving the crisis through diplomatic means, Trump kept his right to make decisions independently.

A strike on Syria, on the eve of the meeting in this context looks like a signal not only a for Pyongyang, but also for Beijing, who is certainly not interested in seeing a US nuclear aircraft carrier near its coast, with the most unpredictable consequences. We believe that all parties should exercise restraint and avoid actions that will lead to deterioration and escalation of the complex situation in the region. The appearance of US aircraft carriers in the Korean Peninsula before has always been considered a traditional element of the policy of Pyongyang containment, which incidentally, still continued to test ballistic missiles and conduct nuclear tests.

The US allies in Tokyo and Seoul apparently view the approach of the strike group as an act of intimidation out of habit, expecting US to act sanely. Since maintaining regional stability under control is becoming increasingly difficult, it is necessary to ensure the deterrence power of the United States. And we support that this power be strengthened.

Since 2016, Pyongyang launched more than 20 ballistic missiles of various ranges, and carried out two nuclear tests. Keeping this in mind, N. Korean activity always increased when Seoul and Wash. conducted military exercises aimed at containing it. Until recently, problems in the Korean Peninsula have been complicated by the fact that there was one unpredictable and uncompromising side.

US attacks on the Syrian air base have shown that now there are at least two such parties, and in this situation the likelihood of a war resuming in the Korean Peninsula today is higher than ever after its end, more than sixty years ago.
